See how Vinyl Masters transformed a 100+ year-old Westfield, NC farmhouse with Steel Blue vinyl siding, shake accents, soffit, trim, and seamless gutters.
Some homes deserve a little extra care when it comes time for an exterior update. This 100+ year-old farmhouse in Westfield, NC had plenty of character worth preserving, but its original wood plank siding was showing its age.
The homeowner wanted to cover the existing wood with a lower-maintenance exterior while keeping the traditional farmhouse character. Over the course of two weeks, our crew completed a full exterior siding and trim installation that gave the home a completely new look.
Covering the Original Wood Siding
The original white wood siding had been on the home for many years. You can see in the before photos where the old finish had weathered and where previous work left exposed fastener and repair areas throughout the exterior.
Rather than changing the character of the house, we used the existing lines and architectural details as the foundation for the new design.
For the main exterior, we installed D5 Dutchlap Traditional Vinyl Siding in Steel Blue. The deeper blue works especially well with the home’s white windows, porch columns and trim.
The new vinyl siding also gives the homeowner an exterior that requires considerably less upkeep than painted wood siding. There is no routine scraping and repainting to keep the siding looking finished.
Adding Vinyl Shake to the Front Gable
One detail we wanted to give some extra attention was the large gable over the front porch.
Instead of carrying the Dutch lap siding all the way to the roofline, we installed Home Accents Vinyl Shake in Steel Blue across the gable. Using the same color with a different profile adds texture without making the exterior overly busy.
The shake siding also fits naturally with the age and architecture of the farmhouse. From the road, the difference in texture gives the front of the home more definition while still allowing the original shape of the house to do most of the work.
Finishing the Soffit, Fascia and Porch
The siding was only one part of this project.
We installed new vinyl soffit throughout the eaves and overhangs, including the porch ceiling. The fascia boards, porch beams and decorative gable supports were wrapped as well.
These finishing details make a substantial difference on an older home. With the white trim surrounding the Steel Blue siding, the rooflines and original architectural details stand out much more clearly.
The covered porch still looks like it belongs on a century-old farmhouse. It simply has a much cleaner exterior around it.
New 6-Inch Seamless Gutters
We finished the exterior with white 6-inch seamless aluminum guttering.
The white gutters tie into the new fascia, soffit and trim while providing the larger-capacity gutter system the home needed. Because the gutters are formed continuously for each run, there are fewer seams along the roofline.
Our seamless gutter installation was completed as part of the overall exterior project, allowing the siding, soffit, fascia and gutter system to be finished together rather than pieced together through several separate projects.
Two Weeks and a Completely Updated Exterior
From the original weathered white wood siding to the finished Steel Blue exterior, this Westfield project took approximately two weeks to complete.
The transformation is especially noticeable from the side of the house. The Steel Blue Dutch lap siding gives the main walls a clean, consistent finish, while the shake siding, bright white trim and original porch details keep the farmhouse character intact.
For a home that’s already been standing for more than 100 years, that’s a pretty good next chapter.
